About Serie D
Serie D History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Brazilian Serie D is the fourth and final national category for the Brazilian club football system. This league was created because of the new rules set to qualify for Serie C, which reduced the number of teams from 64 to 20. The initial season in Serie D had 40 teams, but after many format changes, the league settled to have 64 teams playing the tournament.
Unlike other Brazilian leagues, Serie D operates under a promotion system, with no relegation to a lower category. Instead, teams are determined by a ranking published by the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), which include the four relegated teams from Serie C and the members of state leagues that do not belong to Serie A, Serie B, or Serie C.
To make things easier for all teams, the competition established a format where teams are divided in eight groups of eight teams, which will be based on where they come from. Four teams in each group will make it to the KO stage, where they will be subject to a draw to find out the team they will be facing in each phase. Eventually, the four teams that reach the semifinals will be promoted to Serie C, and the two winners in the semifinal fight for the right to be called Serie D champions.
In terms of how to watch Serie D football in Brazil, the CBF signed a deal with Eleven Sports, who stream games online, and TV Brasil, who make Serie D part of their regular programming.
