About AFC Cup
AFC Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The AFC Cup is an annual Asian club competition run by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC). Founded in 2004, it’s ranked behind the AFC Champions League from a competitive level standpoint, and is mostly contested by clubs from countries that did not receive direct spots in the AFC Champions League.
While the format of this competition has changed throughout the years, it consists of a group stage followed by a knockout round, with teams coming from five zones: the West Asia Zone, South Asia Zone, Central Asia Zone, ASEAN Zone, and East Asia Zone.
In December 2022, a major shake-up was announced. The AFC revealed that the continent’s competition structure would change from the 2024-25 season onward, with the AFC Cup being discontinued while two new tournaments would be introduced — a new second-tier and third-tier competition named the AFC Champions League 2 and the AFC Challenge Cup, respectively.
