The Supercopa de España is an annual Spanish Super Cup tournament run by the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF). Founded in 1982, the competition was initially a typical super cup between the league (La Liga) champions and cup (Copa del Rey) winners. However, the event has since transformed into a mini-knockout tournament consisting of four teams.
From 1982 up until 2017, the Spanish Super Cup was held over two legs between the Primera Division champions and Copa del Rey winners — if one team won the league and cup double, the other ticket would go to the Copa del Rey runners-up. The 2018 edition did away with the two legs as Barcelona beat Sevilla 2-1 in a single-leg tie in Morocco.
In 2019, the tournament expanded to four teams, with the Copa del Rey winners and runners-up joining the Spanish top-flight champions and runners-up. Furthermore, the competition was moved to Saudi Arabia for what was initially supposed to be a mere three-year deal worth €120 million, sparking controversy. RTVE refused to bid for media rights in protest against Saudi Arabia’s human rights record, and as a result, Movistar+ secured broadcasting rights for the 2022-2025 cycle.
In its current format, the competition consists of two single-leg semifinal matches and a final. In the penultimate round, the Primera Division champions face the Copa del Rey runners-up while the Liga runners-up face the cup winners. The event is also no longer a curtain raiser for La Liga and instead takes place in January to reduce the fixture congestion.
As mentioned earlier, RTVE’s refusal to bid for the Supercopa de España media rights following the decision to move the tournament to Saudi Arabia paved the way for Movistar+ to acquire the rights for 2022-2025. Meanwhile, in the UK, TNT Sports (previously BT Sport) acquired broadcasting rights for the Spanish Super Cup for 2021-2024, with discovery+ offering live streaming of this tournament to the platform’s subscribers.
In the USA, ESPN secured the rights to the Spanish Super Cup for the 2022-2027 cycle. The Supercopa de España matches will be available not only for live streaming on ESPN's streaming platform ESPN+ but also on the network's linear channels, including ESPN, ESPN 2, and ESPN Deportes. ABC (2022-2025) and FuboTV (2021-2024) have also entered the U.S. broadcasting scene for this competition.
