VfL Wolfsburg defeated Scottish champions Glasgow City 9-1 to reach the UEFA Women’s Champions League semifinals. However, winger Lauren Wade’s lone effort was the highlight of the clash.

Glasgow City came into this quarterfinal fixture knowing that German giants Wolfsburg would be a true challenge.

The Frauen-Bundesliga champions are Germany’s most successful side in recent history, winning six titles in since their first in the 2012-13 season. Die Wolfinnen have also evolved into European predators collecting 2012-13 and 2013-14 UEFA Women’s Champions League gold medals and silver medals in 2015-16 and 2017-18.

The winningest club in Scottland, Glasgow City, fought through 94 minutes of hell, conceding five goals before they had their first and only shot on target of the match in the 64th minute.

Winger Krystyna Freda converted a long ball into a deadly through ball by heading the ball into space for Lauren Wade to chase. She beat substitute Dominique Janssen and right back Sara Doorsoun-Khajeh to the bouncing ball and swung her left leg across her body, knocking it over German goalkeeper Friederike Abt from an acute angle.

Rightfully so, the goal transmitted a sense of excitement into every Glasgow City representative in the stadium and even neutral bystanders.

Wolfsburg went on to score four more, but none topped Wade’s incredible effort. The goal is worthy of closing her highlight reel videos.
