The French talent has been forced to leave the national team ahead of their crucial UEFA Nations League clash against Croatia.

Kylian Mbappe is the latest superstar, both at and outside PSG, to catch the coronavirus. The French superstar, who was on international duty, has now been sent home after his COVID-19 test on Monday came back positive.

The 2018 World Cup winner featured in their recent 1-0 win over Sweden in the UEFA Nations League, scoring the winning goal, but will play no part in the upcoming showdown with Croatia. The 21-year-old is fortunately asymptomatic, which is the only silver lining.

"Kylian Mbappe will not participate in France versus Croatia on Tuesday evening at 20:45CET at the Stade de France," the French FA’s statement read.

"The result of his Covid-19 test carried out by UEFA on Monday morning was found to be positive. He was placed away from the group after receiving the results, at the end of training, before going back to his own home in the evening.

"Like the entire delegation, Kylian Mbappe had undergone a test prior to the games of the international break. The result was negative, like the one last Wednesday, at the request of UEFA, before Sweden against France."

Mbappe joins a growing list of superstars to contract the deadly virus ahead of the 2020/21 season, which has already begun in some leagues. PSG are set to embark on their Ligue 1 campaign this Thursday against Lens, which Kylian will sit out. Additionally, the reigning champions are scheduled to take on Marseille in Le Classique only three days later but the goalscoring machine will not be at Tuchel’s disposal come that Sunday fixture.

Up to six Les Parisiens players have tested positive for the coronavirus and while the club have not disclosed their identity, those men are believed to be Neymar, Marquinhos, Keylor Navas, Angel Di Maria, Mauro Icardi, and Leandro Paredes. However, PSG are not the only club to have racked up COVID-19 cases.

Barcelona’s Miralem Pjanic is a standout case from La Liga while over in the Premier League, Manchester stars Paul Pogba, Riyad Mahrez, and Aymeric Laporte have all tested positive for COVID-19. This will be a worry for football organizers, given that the English top-flight season kicks off on September 12 while the start date for La Liga is a day earlier on September 11.
