Preview: Chelsea vs Liverpool

Chelsea will face their first major test as they prepare to host reigning champions Liverpool at Stamford Bridge on Sunday. For fans and neutrals alike, this will be a match certainly to watch, as both teams seek to build up a strong start to the nascent season. Both the Blues and the Reds come into this game having won their respective season openers, with Chelsea easing to a 3-1 road win over Brighton, while Liverpool were able to survive a seven goal thriller against newly promoted Leeds United to win the match 4-3.

Neither team was in absolute top form on matchday one despite their respective wins, and both Frank Lampard and Jurgen Klopp will be hoping to see some improvements from their squads in this game. For the Blues, last match saw the debuts of German duo Timo Werner and Kai Havertz. Neither player was able to get himself on the score-sheet, but considering the two were signed due to their impressive form with RB Leipzig and Bayer Leverkusen and are just getting adjusted to a new league, Blues fans will certainly have hope that the two will be up and running soon.

As for visiting side Liverpool, they have a tricky fixture list early on. After Chelsea, their next Premier League tie will see them take on Arsenal, and the first installment of this season's Merseyside Derby will take place on October 17th. Klopp's side really had to work hard against a stubborn Leeds United, who matched them goal for goal until Mohamed Salah finally put the matter to rest by completing his hat-trick via a late penalty.

The reigning champs made some notable signings this summer - the biggest being former Bayern Munich and Barcelona midfielder Thiago. The Spanish international comes over to Anfield having won a Treble with die Roten, and Liverpool fans will certainly be looking forward to see how his addition will further boost their chances of retaining the league crown.

The Reds have a solid track record against the Blues, with just one loss in their last six visits to Stamford Bridge; and have won all of their last three meetings with Chelsea. However, Sunday's hosts have a very interesting trend when it comes to taking on reigning champs on home turf - they're undefeated in their last 13 games, with wins in seven of those.
