The first installment of the Choc des Olympiques of the 2020/2021 Ligue 1 campaign will get underway on Sunday, October 4th as Lyon welcome Marseille.

Preview: Lyon vs Marseille

Last season was arguably one of Lyon's most successful campaigns in recent times. Despite finishing in seventh spot in Ligue 1, under Rudi Garcia's tutelage, Les Gones made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Champions League, which is their best ever result since the 2009/2010 term. However, this year has seen them experienced mixed results as they've won just one of their first five games - a 4-1 victory over struggling Dijon - and have now picked up just three out of a possible 12 from their last quartet of ties.

So far, key attacker Memphis Depay has netted four goals, with three of those coming during Lyon's comfortable win against Dijon on matchday one.  The hosts followed up their victory with a dull stalemate against Bordeaux, and then lost 2-1 to Montpellier in another road fixture. In their next home tie, they were unable to pick up all three points in a clash with Nimes as they failed to score in yet another insipid 0-0 draw. And their recent match saw them have to really fight to secure a point against a determined Lorient side.

Marseille, for their part, finished in a very impressive second place in last season's Ligue 1, which was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic. They've also fared slightly better than their upcoming opponents so far, with two victories from their first five games. That includes drawing first blood in the highly anticipated Classique clashes fans look forward to each year - albeit their 1-0 win at the Parc des Princes was marred in controversy with five players (two from Lyon) being sent off. In addition, Spanish defender Alvaro Gonzalez was accused of racial abuse by superstar attacker Neymar, but managed to escape any punishment after the LFP failed to find enough conclusive evidence to support Neymar's claim.

Both teams will be eager to pick up a much needed win in this tie, as they both currently find themselves outside the top half of the table. Marseille have been in decent form on the road, with wins in their last five fixtures, but Lyon have a formidable track record against L'OM at home, where they're undefeated in their last 15 games across all comps.

Lyon: Only Jeff Reine-Adélaïde misses out due to injury, which will give Rudi Garcia a strong selection of options for his starting XI.

Marseille: Likewise, Andre Villas-Boas doesn't have any serious injury or suspension concerns to worry him, as he will be able to welcome defender Jordan Amavi back from a ban. Only fellow defender Bouna Sarr is a doubt for this match.
