Preview: Chelsea vs Southampton

Although they are four places apart in the table, only one point separates Chelsea and Southampton as the two sides prepare to do battle at Stamford Bridge. Frank Lampard's men have had a somewhat wobbly start to the season, namely having to claw their way back into the game to secure a three-all draw against West Brom, but they headed into the international break in better spirits following a solid 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace. However, the Blues have a Champions League test against serial Europa League winners Sevilla coming up, and Lampard will want to keep all his key players fresh in order to earn maximum points in their group stage opener.

Meanwhile, Ralph Hasenhuttl's side come into this match also off the back of a win as Southampton look to rebound after a bad start to their 2020/2021 campaign. The Saints lost their first two games, but have since worked their way up the table by stringing together back to back victories. Notably, they did beat Chelsea 2-0 in this same fixture last season, but it's been 35 years since they managed to earn consecutive away wins against the London giants. That being said, Southampton haven't lost an away game in the Premier League since February, and with Chelsea missing their first choice shot-stopper due to injury, the visitors just may be fancying their chances at nicking at least a point.

Team news: Chelsea vs Southampton

Chelsea: New signing Hakim Ziyech could make his debut here after recovering from a knee injury that had kept him out of the squad for over a month. In addition, Christian Pulisic is expected to return to the fold in some capacity, along with Ben Chilwell. However, new shot-stopper Edouard Mendy suffered a knee injury while on international duty for Senegal and thus will miss this match -  meaning that either Kepa Arrizabalaga or Willy Caballero will get the nod for this upcoming match. Finally, veteran defender Thiago Silva will not feature here due to fatigue following his travels back from Brazil.

Southampton: Mohammed Salisu is out with an injury and isn't expected to be fully recovered in at least a couple of weeks, while Stuart Armstrong and Moussa Djenepo miss out due to a positive COVID-19 test and injury respectively.
