The Gunners return to action in Europe for Matchday 3 of the 2020/21 UEFA Europa League season, taking on Norwegian side Molde. Here’s everything you need to know about Thursday’s Emirates Stadium clash.

Preview – Arsenal vs Molde

Arsenal are gearing up for another interesting Europa League fixture, this time hosting Molde on Matchday 3 of the 2020/21 season. The north London giants, despite their recent struggles in the Premier League, have been doing extremely well in Europe and will go in search of their third straight victory in this competition.

Mikel Arteta's men began the campaign with a trip to Rapid Wien and despite being the huge favorites, the Premier League outfit were outperformed by their Austrian opponents. In fact, Arsenal conceded first and were 1-0 down for good portions of the game but turned things around in quick succession thanks to goals from David Luiz and Aubameyang. Their following fixture was against Dundalk and that ended in a straight-forward 3-0 triumph for Arsenal.

The English heavyweights enter this fixture on the back of a confidence-boosting win over Man United in the league. Aubameyang and Co. traveled to Old Trafford and recorded their first victory there in the English top-flight since 2006, beating Solskjaer's side 1-0. Creativity, or a lack thereof, remained an issue in that game but a second-half penalty, which was converted by their captain, was enough to seal the win.

Molde have been in excellent form and should, in theory, offer the Gunners a stern test. They are second in the Norwegian top-flight and are on a four-game winning streak, having also triumphed in their two opening Europa League games. Will they pull off an upset against Arteta's side? Tune in to find out.

Team news

Arsenal: The Gunners have received a huge boost and that is the early return of David Luiz, who is now fit against and in the squad for this game. Arteta has no fresh concerns since the Man United victory, meaning Rob Holding is available to partner Luiz in case the coach decides to give Gabriel a rest. Xhaka and Ceballos, who were both dropped to the bench for the Old Trafford tie, will be keen on returning to the lineup. Nketiah, Willock, and Nelson will also be pushing for starts.

Molde: Kristoffer Haraldseid is on the sidelines and will play no part in this fixture. Martin Ellingsten, meanwhile, will be vying for a starting berth.

Key stats

  • This will be the first encounter between these two clubs.

  • Arsenal have won three of their four clashes with European teams, drawing the remaining encounter.

  • This will be Molde's first showdown with an English team.

  • Norwegian clubs have never won away to a Premier League side, drawing twice and losing 20.
