Preview – Arsenal vs Aston Villa

Matchday 8 of the 2020/21 Premier League season will see Arsenal host Aston Villa in what should be an interesting showdown. These two clubs sit level on points heading into the game and are aware that a win could lift one of these two clubs up to sixth should Wolves slip up at Leicester.

The hosts occupy the 10th position and sit one spot behind their opponents due to an inferior goal difference – you can thank the Villans' 7-2 win over Liverpool for that. The Gunners head into this fixture on the back of good form, having won their three on a trot after back-to-back defeats in the league.

Two of those victories were comfortable triumphs in the Europa League, winning 3-0 and 4-1 against Dundalk and Molde, respectively. Of the three, their English top-flight victory was the most significant, beating Man Utd 1-0 away, their first league win at Old Trafford since 2006.

That result also brought an end to Arsenal's wait for a win away to the top six, having last achieved that with their 2-0 victory at Man City back in January 2015. This fixture, however, is a home game and the major hurdle the Gunners must overcome is the lack of creativity.

Lacazette has not been clinical in front of goal, Aubameyang has lacked service, while the likes of Pepe and Willian have been inconsistent. The addition of Thomas Partey has tremendously boosted Arteta's midfield, with the Ghanaian establishing a lovely partnership with Mohamed Elneny in the Old Trafford victory.

As for Aston Villa, they have not been in great form as of late and have dropped to ninth in the standings, having lost twice since recording excellent back-to-back wins over Liverpool and Leicester. Dean Smith's side have conceded seven in their last two but will look to the likes of Martinez and Grealish to put in an inspiring performance at the back and at front.

Team news

Arsenal: Gabriel and Partey should return to the lineup after being rested during the midweek European game. It will be interesting to see whether Holding is dropped for David Luiz after the Englishman's excellent match at Old Trafford. Reiss Nelson and Calum Chambers are unavailable while Pablo Mari and Gabriel Martinelli remain sidelined.

Aston Villa: Bertrand Traore is out with a groin injury and will not be back until after the international break, joining Wesley on the sidelines. Tom Heaton is back at full training but is not yet fit for this game.

Key stats

Unfortunately, they have lost their last three trips to the Emirates Stadium by an aggregate score of 12-2.
