U.S. Women’s National Team’s Alex Morgan earned her first start with Tottenham Hotspur, while the other four Americans competing in the FA WSL continued to leave their mark in English soccer.

The Barclays FA Women’s Super League is looking more competitive than ever with the top-five teams separated by only five points after seven Matchdays. Last weekend, the league hosted the Manchester Derby and the London Derby, making it a key matchday for each of the team involved. The two games ended in draws, meaning that Manchester United will head into international break in first place by just one point over Arsenal.

Forwards Tobin Heath and Christen Press are enjoying their time with Manchester United as they remain in first place after a second challenging week in a row. Midfielders Sam Mewis and Rose Lavelle are still looking to raise the level of Manchester City as they head into international break in fifth place. And forward Alex Morgan finally started a game for Tottenham Hotspur after a patient two-month wait.

Tobin Heath & Christen Press vs. Sam Mewis & Rose Lavelle – Manchester Derby

Four USWNT stars featured in the electric Manchester Derby on Saturday. Heath and Press started for the Red Devils, while Mewis made it to the Citizens' starting XI as usual. Lavelle was the only American left on the bench.

Man City dominated the first half of the game, scoring in the opening ten minutes of play and doubling its lead just before the halftime whistle. However, the game saw a major change in momentum in the second half as Manchester United raised its tempo, pressing high in enemy territory. As a result, the Red Devils were able to score a couple of goals to even the scoring, including a cracking finish by Heath.

Out of the three Americans on the field, Heath was the best performer. Playing on her natural position in the left-wing, the 32-year-old completed all her passes (16/16), making her the only player to have 100% pass accuracy in the derby.

Not far behind was Mewis, who continues to be a key figure in Gareth Taylor’s squad. The 28-year-old created the most chances for goal (3) for Man City and only Heath matched her in that department. Mewis even influenced Manchester City’s second goal forward by dragging three defenders with her and taking a shot, which was deflected and ultimately landed on Laura Coombs’ feet for her to finish.

Press started up top as a lone striker but missed-out on Manchester United’s best minutes after being subbed off by forward Lauren James in the 55th minute. On the other hand, Taylor decided not to use Lavelle, who watched the entirety of the game from the bench.

Alex Morgan – Tottenham Hotspur

Morgan finally cracked into Juan Amoros and Karen Hills’ starting lineup for the first time since her arrival in London. Yet, Morgan was not able to dig-out the Spurs from the hole they find themselves in.

The North London side is still looking for its first win of their FA WSL campaign, having lost four and tied three. Tottenham had a great chance to win its first game on Saturday against bottom-of-the-table Bristol City, but the Robins’ tenacity earned them their first point of the season after forward Ebony Salmon scored the equalizer in regulation time.
