Following the conclusion on of the international break, Manchester United return to Premier League action by hosting West Brom at Old Trafforf.

Match preview

Manchester United will have their sight set on clearing their home frustrations when they welcome West Brom to Old Trafford on Saturday. The Red Devils have endured a poor start in their backyard this season as they are yet to pick up a win despite featuring at the grounds on four occasions. While the combative nature of the games cannot be overruled, it would not have come as a surprise had Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men picked up maximum points against these sides.

Their misery was first instilled by Crystal Palace who ran away with a 3-1 win at Old Trafford in the hosts' first league game of the season. This was followed by a humiliating 6-1 defeat to Jose Mourinho's Tottenham Hotspur before a little calm was restored with the goalless draw against Chelsea. A 1-0 defeat to Arsenal on Matchday 7 extended the winless home run, as the Gunners grabbed their first-ever win at Old Trafford in over 14 years.

In retrospect, Manchester United have often shown signs of honing the character to compete despite lacking consistency. Against West Brom, the Red Devils will look to draw inspiration from the performance they saw them defeat an in-form Everton side prior to the international break. They approach the weekend's game off the back of six wins, three defeats and two draws in all competitions.

For West Brom, Saturday's trip to Old Trafford presents the best opportunity for them to turn their season around for good. Following their promotion to the top-flight league from the Championship, the Baggies are yet to hit their stride and make a claim to remain in the Premier League at the end of the season. They currently sit 18th on the table, having accrued just three points from eight outings so far.

Indeed, it has not been for the lack of trying as a commanding performance on Matchday 3 almost saw them run away as victors against Chelsea. However, the desire to close out games has consistently been the achilles heel of Slaven Bilic's men who had to settle for a 3-3 draw against Chelsea after taking a 3-0 lead in the first half.

So far, none of their last eight matches has yielded a win and the club from West Midlands will approach their upcoming test with Manchester United with five losses and three draws under their belts. Needless to say, the resilience they showed before Harry Kane snatched a late winner for Tottenham Hotspur in the previous game could come in handy when they face-off with the Red Devils whose struggles at home cannot be overlooked.

Team news

Manchester United will be without the injured Luke Shaw and Eric Bailly when they take on West Brom on Saturday. Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial, Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof are all doubts for the game after picking up knocks during the international break. Meanwhile, there is a boost in camp with Alex Telles recovering from the coronavirus.

For West Brom, Hal Robson-Kanu and Sam Field will not feature against Manchester United on Saturday due to injury. However, Branislav Ivanovic, Matheus Pereira and Callum Robinson are all ready to feature in the lineup after making a recovery from the COVID-19.

Predicted starting XI

  • Manchester United possible starting lineup: De Gea; Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire, Telles; McTominay, Fred; Mata, Fernandes, Rashford; Martial

  • West Bromwich Albion possible starting lineup: Johnstone; Furling, Ivanovic, Bartley, O'Shea, Townsend; Gallagher, Livermore, Krovinovic; Pereira, Grant.
