The Argentine icon was recovering from a recent surgery in his home country less than one month after his 60th birthday.

November 25th will be remembered as a sad day for football history, as legend Diego Armando Maradona has passed away just one month after his 60th birthday.

The footballer was recovering from a head surgery at his resting home in the province of Tigre, where reports state he suffered a heart attack. Doctors tried to perform CPR methods on the Argentine, but his body did not respond to the treatment and he was pronounced dead around 12:00 ART.

The football icon lived a controversial life, dazzling fans around the world with his skills on the pitch, but his vocal personality away from the pitch caused some experts to diminish the impact he had on the game. His love for the Argentine football team and for Boca Juniors go to the grave with him.

Perhaps the most touching tribute to his memory was provided by himself. In a staged interview he made on himself on his TV show "La Noche del Diez", Maradona thanked the sport that made him a global icon for its influence in his life, and even shared what his grave should say when the time came for him to leave the world.

"Thanks for playing football, because it is the sport that gave all the joy, all the freedom. It was like touching the sky with your hands. Yes, I'd put it in my gravestone: 'thank you, football'," the legend said in 2005.
