Preview: Chelsea vs Spurs

It's set to be a case of former player versus former manager as Frank Lampard's Chelsea welcome Jose Mourinho's Spurs to Stamford Bridge for a mouth-watering London Derby clash on Sunday. As things stand, both Chelsea and Tottenham sit in the top four, with Spurs bumped down to second temporarily following Liverpool's draw and the Blues resting just two points behind in third place.

Both teams have been in excellent form domestically. Chelsea come into this match on a seven game unbeaten streak, which is only bettered by Tottenham's eight game run, and notably, Spurs are just one of three sides with a perfect 100 per cent winning record on the road so far this season. Interestingly, though, Mourinho has not fared well in meetings with his former player - with losses from his prior two Premier League meetings against Lampard's side. Should he fail to win at Stamford Bridge, it will mark the first time in his managerial career that he's lost three consecutive matches against the same manager (or club).

To compound matters, Tottenham have historically struggled on the road against Chelsea, with just one victory in their last 34 matches across all competitions, but that sole win was as recently as April 2018 (3-1). Moreover, star striker Harry Kane has been directly involved in a whopping 16 goals for his team (seven goals, nine assists), while fellow attacker Son Heung-Min has chipped in with nine goals and two assists.

All in all, the visitors have won their last five games across all comps, which includes a recent 4-0 comfortable win over Eastern European outfit Ludogorets in the Europa League, and already beat Chelsea earlier this season when they knocked the Blues out of the League Cup on spot-kicks. In tgree of their last five wins, Spurs also matained a clean sheet - most notably in their 2-0 win over Manchester City in what many pundits described as a tactical masterclass brilliantly executed by Mourinho over Pep Guardiola's side.

That being said, Chelsea are also on an impressive winning streak of their own: six games in all competitions, and that includes a tough 2-1 road win over a Rennes side who were hoping to try to avoid a third straight loss in their European campaign. Both sides have been equally impressive up front as they have been pretty solid defensively: Spurs have scored 21 goals, with 16 of them coming from Kane and Son, while Chelsea slightly betters them with 22, while Mourinho's side boast the better defensive record with nine goals conceded versus Lampard's side, who have shipped ten.

With both teams having a great chance at threatening - or in Tottenham's case, overtaking - Liverpool at the top of the league table, this game will certainly be that much more intense. Chelsea, naturally, will be keen on getting revenge on Spurs for ending their League Cup run while maintaining their formidable record at Stamford Bridge that has seen them lose just one of their last 34 meetings with their London rivals. As for Tottenham, they, naturally will want to overcome a frustrating hoodoo and Mourinho personally will not want to set an unwanted milestone in his long career - especially not at the hands of a manager that he once managed himself not too long ago.
