Preview: Milan vs Fiorentina

Still on top of the league table, it's safe to say that Milan are having a much better season than any of their fans could have ever imagined. The Rossoneri are just one of two sides who have yet to lose a game this season (the other being reigning champs Juventus) and they come into this match boasting a two point gap over the chasing pack. With a game in hand, that could be extended to five should they, as expected, defeat struggling Fiorentina when the Viola arrive at the Stadio San Siro on Sunday afternoon.

Despite suffering a reversal to Lille on matchday three of their Europa League campaign, the Diavolo rebounded recently by holding the same side to a one-all stalemate. Furthermore, they are still unbeaten in Serie A fixtures, a run that stretches back to last season and are just one of a few teams in Europe's "Big five" leagues to have yet to lose a league game. A win over Fiorentina would extend this to 21 games, but notably is their points total so far: 20. Indeed, the last tme Milan earned 20 points after eight games was in 2003/2004 - and they won the Scudetto.

Of course, it's still way too early to predict if Stefano Pioli's side will be the first to prevent Juventus from again winning the league title - although it was Milan who were the last side other than the Bianconeri to win the Scudetto, back in 2011. The hosts come into this match having narrowly edged out Napoli in a tense encounter, but are the clear favorites against a Fiorentina side who recently lost to newly promoted Benevento on home turf.

Furthermore, Milan have netted in their last 28 league games, which is their longest streak in over 40 years. That being said, they lately have not had the best results against their Tuscan opponents, with just five wins from their last 18 meetings, and seven losses during that same time-frame. In addition, Pioli's side will have to make do without star striker and current team top goal-scorer Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who is an early contender for the Capocannoniere at 39 years of age. The Swedish star is out for the next few weeks with a knee injury, meaning that Croatian attacker Ante Rebic will again lead the line in his stead as he did for the team's match versus Lille earlier in the prior week.

Fiorentina, for their part, have dismissed their coach and brought back a familiar face: Cesare Prandelli. The Viola are again floundering, and Prandelli's debut did not go as he wanted as he was the man on the bench when they lost to Benevento at the Stadio Artemio Franchi. He will now be hoping to avoid a second straight loss as he takes on Pioli - a man who also is quite familiar with Fiorentina as he managed them prior to arriving in his current position as Rossoneri technician.

The Viola did recover from their embarrassing 1-0 defeat to Benevento by powering past Udinese in the Coppa Italia three days later. Yet, although Milan's record hasn't been the best against Fiorentina lately, and the Diavolo will be missing a key player up front, it's hard to see them managing to become the first team in Serie A to stop the current league leaders this season.

Team news: Milan vs Fiorentina

Milan: The biggest absence for the hosts will be veteran striker Zlatan Ibrahimovic, with the Swedish ace out for a few weeks due to a thigh injury. This means that Croatian international Ante Rebic will be expected to lead the line in his stead. Meanwhile, Belgian winger Alexis Saelemaekers has mostly recovered from an ankle issue and could be given some game-time in this upcoming tie. In addition, both Ismael Bennacer and Samu Castillejo are out with muscular and knee injuries respectively.

Fiorentina: Both Franck Ribéry and Giacomo Bonaventura are in doubt for this fixture, but veteran attacker Ribéry is the more likely to feature here.
