Preview: Spurs vs Brentford

Jose Mourinho will be looking to take one step closer towards winning his fifth League Cup as Tottenham welcome Championship side Brentford for the semi-finals of the 2020/2021 edition on Tuesday evening. Naturally, Spurs are the heavy favorites against the visiting Bees, who are the only non-Premier League side remaining in this competition. The winner of this contest will face either Manchester United or Manchester City in the final which will be played in April, and having started off 2021 on the right foot, Tottenham will be looking to continue in the same vein in their second game of the new year.

After concluding 2020 with a disappointing 1-1 draw with Wolves and seeing their match against relegation-threatened Fulham cancelled due to COVID-19, Spurs rebounded nicely to record a comfortable 3-0 win over Leeds last round which has helped them move back into a top four spot in the table. They certainly will be fancying their chances against Brentford, especially given that their opponents have never won an away match against them (D2 L5) and their last win was back in March 1948 in a league tie at their home ground.

That being said, Brentford have been in solid form lately, and sit in fourth place in the Championship. More important, Thomas Frank's side are unbeaten in their last 16 games across all competitions, with their last defeat taking place on October 24th, when they lost 3-2 to Stoke City. They also are a bit more well-rested than their opponents as their match against Bristol was cancelled, but that could also be a bit of a double-edged sword as it may have interrupted their groove a bit ahead of this match.

The Bees, who are featuring in their first-ever League Cup semi final, are hoping to feature in the final for the first time, but will obviously need to find a way past an opponent they have never beaten in this competition. This will be the fourth encounter between Spurs and Brentford, and it's not surprising that it's the London side who hold the better record, with three wins so far to Brentford's zero.

Team news: Spurs vs Brentford

Spurs: Gareth Bale and Giovani Lo Celso are out with calf and hamstring injuries respectively, while Matt Doherty is serving a one-match suspension. Erik Lamela also will play no part in this match after being caught violating COVID-19 rules.

Brentford: As for the visitors, only Shandon Baptiste is a definite absentee ahead of this match.
