Bayern's once comfortable lead over the chasing pack has now evaporated following their failure to win two consecutive matches.

Just when it had started to look like Bayern had began their canter towards another league title, leaving everyone else in their wake, the rest of the chasing pack decided to put a stop to that. At one point, the reigning champions were looking good to head into the final stretch firmly in control of the title race. But as this season has shown, Bayern, despite being the natural favorites, will have to work a lot harder if they want the Bundesliga crown to remain in Munich for another term.

Let's have a look at what took place over this weekend's round of fixtures.

Top five teams in the Bundesliga up to February 22

Bayer Leverkusen's indifferent form lately has seen them slip further behind a recently resurgent Wolfsburg and Eintracht Frankfurt, who are making a solid push for Champions League football by consolidating their respective grips on third and fourth place. Meanwhile, Bayern no longer have a comfortable lead over the chasing pack after failing to win two on the trot

Who are the top three scorers in the Bundesliga?

Despite netting his 26th goal of the current campaign, Robert Lewandowski wasn't able to prevent his team from slumping to a 2-1 loss to Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday

Eintracht Frankfut get revenge: Arguably, Eintracht Frankfurt have been the most in-form side not just in Germany, but across Europe's biggest five leagues. Die Adler have lost just twice this season, and none of those defeats have taken place after December 15th. One of the teams who had managed to get the better of Adi Hutter's side was none other than Bayern Munich, and as such, Frankfurt were definitely looking for more than just three points when the two sides squared off in a top-four spot on Saturday.

By the time the dust had settled, Frankfurt had battled to a 2-1 home win and managed to keep Bayern at bay despite Robert Lewandowski attempting to rally his side to a comeback. As things stand, Frankfurt sit in fourth spot and are in a great position to secure Champions League football for the first time in club history.

Wolfsburg continue to inch up the table: Along with Frankfurt, Wolfsburg are the only team to have lost just twice this season, and just like die Adler, die Wölfe have been having an excellent 2021. Their only loss so far this year was on January 3rd, when they were beaten 2-0 by Borussia Dortmund; since then, Oliver Glasner's side have overtaken the same die Schwarzgelben in the standings thanks to an eight match unbeaten streak (five wins, three draws). That has helped them to rise from sixth place to a season-high third in seemingly record time, and they remain unbeaten on home turf ahead of their next match against Hertha Berlin on Saturday.

Concerns for Bayern? Die Roten have now failed to win their last two games and have seen their once solid lead over everyone else evaoprate. As things stand, if they fail to win their upcoming match with Cologne and Leipzig beat Gladbach, the reigning champs could end up falling out of top spot for the first time since December 11th, when they slipped down into second spot following back to back draws with Leipzig and Union Berlin.

Dortmund respond in style: Die Schwarzgelben have unfortunately slipped well off the title pace due to some bad results lately, but they did end their two match winless streak in style this weekend. Erling Haaland was again the star of the show as they cruised to a 4-0 win in the Ruhr Derby to bring them to 36 points, but there's still a lot of work to do between now and May if they want to at least secure Champions League football for next season.

Top Bundesliga matches: February 26-28, 2021

Werder Bremen vs Eintracht Frankfurt: Die Adler are soaring so far in 2021 and having beaten Bayern 2-1 this past weekend, Adi Hutter's team will certainly be looking to continue their sparkling form when they travel to face Werder Bremen. Although their hosts have won just one of their last five games, they're not in danger of relegation just yet. Still, having lost 4-0 to Hoffenheim recently, and failed to score in a scoreless draw with Freiburg, Bremen will hope to avoid going the entire month of February without scoring a single goal in the Bundesliga.

Bayern Munich vs Cologne: Die Roten will come into this match winless in their last two games since winning their sixth trophy of the season. With just two points dividing them from Leipzig, Hansi Flick's men will now be feeling some pressure to get back to winning ways quickly in order to avoid giving up top spot by the time this matchday concludes. As for Cologne, they sit in 14th spot, but having lost three of their last five games - including two in a row - the visitors find themselves uncomfortably close to the unwanted drop zone.

Wolfsburg vs Hertha Berlin: Another side who has had an excellent 2021, Wolfsburg will look to make it a ninth consecutive league fixture (tenth in all comps) sans a defeat. More important, die Wolfe haven't conceded a goal since January 16th, when they battled to a two-all draw with title aspirants RB Leipzig, while scoring 11 times (12 if one includes their DFB-Pokal win over Schalke). Will they be able to maintain this impressive record, or will Hertha Berlin, who are desperately avoiding slipping into the relegation spots manage to breach their defense?

RB Leipzig vs Borussia M'Gladbach: After a tricky first half of the season, Gladbach seemingly appeared to be experiencing a revival when 2021 rolled around. That included beating both Bayern and Dortmund by score-lines of 3-2 and 4-2 respectively. Notably, their win over die Roten saw them come from two goals down to secure a well-earned victory, while they also came from behind to pick up three points against die Schwarzgelben. January, indeed, was a highly successful month for Marco Rose's side, who won four of their five Bundesliga fixtures played last month. However, since February rolled around, it hasn't been smooth sailing and they've since slid back down the table.

Leipzig, meanwhile, have been slowly closing the gap on Bayern thanks to a successful end of January into February that has seen them win four on the trot. A win here, coupled with a defeat for Bayern would have Julian Naglesmann's men back in top spot for the first time since matchdays three through five.
