The league leaders dropped points for the second week in a row, leaving the title race wide open between themselves and Porto.

The 2020-21 Primeira Liga title race continues to keep fans on the edge of their seats, especially since Sporting have not been as dominant as they have been throughout the season.

This weekend, the league leaders dropped two more points in their home game against Famalicao, which came in handy for Porto to narrow the gap between them and the top of the league. Now, things will get even more complicated for the Lions if they concede more points, especially since there is no clear advantage for any of these teams in case they ended up level on points.

Without further ado, let's have a look at what went down in the Portuguese top-flight this weekend.

Top four teams in the Primeira Liga until April 11

Sporting are now six points ahead of Porto after their draw, which combined with Porto's victory over Tondela. Meanwhile, Benfica kept themselves in third place with an emphatic victory over Pacos de Ferreira, which was good enough to keep Braga three points behind them in the race to finish third.

Primeira Liga's Top 3 scorers

Benfica's Haris Seferovic is now the joint top scorer in the league following his brace against Pacos de Ferreira. Sporting's Pedro Gonçalves was finally able to score a goal in the league since February, but that was not enough to keep the top spot to himself. Porto's Sergio Oliveira is still third with 12 goals to his name.

Primeira Liga - Top headlines

  • Former Benfica striker set to return to Estadio da Luz - Carlos Vinicius, who left Benfica to try his goalscoring shoes in the Premier League, is set to return to Estadio Da Luz after an unsuccessful spell on loan. Apparently, Tottenham will not execute the buyout clause on the loan deal to fund other transfers, which will include a goalkeeper, defenders, and one more striker.

  • Taremi's poor form caused by "inner issues" - Striker Mehdi Taremi finally found the back of the net to end a spell of bad luck both on and off the pitch, according to an interview by his father. The striker scored his tenth goal of the season for Porto after dealing with "mental issues" that his father refused to disclose.

  • Sporting boss banned for 15 days after rant vs Famalicao - Sporting's unbeaten run has been put in jeopardy for the past two games, and coach Ruben Amorim was not able to deal with the pressure and ended up being sent off against Famalicao last weekend. Now, the former midfielder will have to pay a fine and spend the next two weeks away from the dugout after insulting the referee.

Top matches to watch in the Primeira Liga from April 16-18, 2021

  • Farense vs Sporting - The league leaders will travel to face a team trying to avoid relegation. Will this be the game in which Ruben Amorim's men end their winless run of two games?

  • Benfica vs Gil Vicente - The Eagles are getting ready to face Gil Vicente, a club that saw their three-game winning streak come to an end last weekend. With only three points between Jorge Jesús' men and Porto, a win for the red and white side will be imperative to keep their slim chances of winning the title alive.

  • Nacional vs Porto - It will be a tricky match for Sergio Conceicao's men, as they will have to deal with fatigue after this week's UEFA Champions League game. Furthermore, Conceicao's men have struggled to beat teams that are involved in the lower part of the table, and it will be their duty to try and avoid that jinx to keep their pursuit of Sporting going.
