About TUDN USA
About TUDN
TUDN is a Spanish-language sports television channel in the United States, which was formerly known as Univision Deportes Network and referred to as UDN. It is owned by Univision Communications—a media company that has tailored its content towards Hispanic and Latino Americans in the U.S. since it was founded in 1962.
TUDN, which now stands for Televisa Univision Deportes Network, first launched on April 7, 2012, on DishLATINO and DISH’s America’s Top 200 package. Its launch day schedule was highlighted by an afternoon Major League Soccer game, as well as two Liga MX fixtures.
A year later, TUDN’s viewership statistics began being measured by Nielsen, shedding light on the network’s ratings and performance against other major North American sports broadcasters. In 2014, with already 40 million homes having access to the network, the 24-hour channel expanded its reach by signing a long-term agreement with Comcast to be added to Xfinity’s cable TV service.
As the No.1 Spanish-language sports cable network in the United States, TUDN has repeatedly outdone itself to establish new TV records over the years. In 2016, its coverage of the Copa America Centenario Finals averaged 2.9 million total viewers, with the final match between Argentina and Chile averaging 6.8 million—making it the leading TV station in primetime among adults, ahead of ESPN, Fox Sports and NBC Sports channels.
TUDN’s year-over-year increase of +33% reported in January 2017 confirmed it as the fastest-growing network on TV in USA, for any language. Many of TUDN’s simulcasts of matches featured on flagship channel Univision have helped it further dominate TV ratings in the U.S. In 2019, the UEFA Champions League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Liverpool FC propelled TUDN’s viewership above competition, as it took a remarkable share of the nearly 4 million total viewers who tuned in to the live broadcast on Univision networks.
TUDN’s coverage of major soccer tournaments is regularly complemented with match analysis and extra programming featuring a host of soccer legends. Notable personalities who have appeared on TUDN as commentators or analysts include Italian World Cup champion Mauro Camoranesi, former assistant coach for the Mexican national team Jesús Bracamontes, and ex-Argentina international and Champions League winner Javier Zanetti—all of whom took part in the 2014 FIFA World Cup coverage.
Live soccer on TUDN over the years has largely consisted of matches in the CONCACAF and UEFA regions, as well as big games from the international scene. Arguably the cornerstone of its soccer programming, Mexican soccer has trended on the network over time. Many live matches from the Mexican national team in Friendlies or international tournaments have been aired live. The same goes for the USA national soccer team, who has enjoyed extensive Spanish-language coverage for its Men’s and Women’s matches.
TUDN’s history of soccer broadcast rights unsurprisingly includes the CONCACAF Champions League, CONCACAF Gold Cup, and CONMEBOL Copa America. It was also a major broadcaster of the FIFA World Cup back in 2014, slotting 56 matches live in its summer schedule, while airing the remaining 8 as delayed broadcasts.
Fans of the Major League Soccer and Liga MX have benefited from comprehensive coverage over the years on TUDN. The Mexican Copa MX and CONCACAF Champions League have received airtime as well; but these North American competitions have not been the only ones available at club level on the channel. TUDN added diversity to its portfolio back in 2017 when they signed a three-year sublicensing deal with fellow Spanish-language pay-TV network Fox Deportes for the rights to the German Bundesliga. Before that event, TUDN had aired the Dutch Eredivisie, the Portuguese Primeira Liga, and even France’s Ligue 1 and French Cup.
TUDN is available on satellite in USA on DISH Network channel 856, and DirecTV channel 464, in both HD and SD. It is available on various cable systems, including Comcast Xfinity; however, the channel number is dependent on the location. In Chicago, for instance, TUDN is available in HD on channel 332 and in SD on channel 596. In other areas, the HD version may be available on Xfinity channel 1229. In parts of California, such as in Arroyo Grande or the Contra Costa County, TUDN comes in SD on Xfinity channel 618 and in HD on channel 819.
IPTV users may subscribe to Verizon FiOS to watch TUDN in HD on channel 1539; otherwise, online streaming of the network is available on AT&T-owned platform DirecTV Now and OTT streaming service FuboTV. Both DirecTV Now and FuboTV provide mobile apps for Android and iOS, in addition to their PC and Mac streaming options on the web.
Alternatively, live streaming of TUDN may be carried out through TUDN En Vivo, the network’s official online streaming service running on its website. Android and iOS versions of TUDN En Vivo are equally available for mobile devices on the Google Play Store and Apple’s App Store.
TUDN switched from its previous name Univision Deportes after a strategic partnership between Univision and Grupo Televisa involving their respective sports divisions, which was announced in the early half of 2019. UDN was rebranded to TUDN in July that year, with the ‘T’ letter in its new acronym alluding to Televisa.
Following the alliance, TUDN became the first bi-national sports network on TV. Under its new direction, fresh soccer programs were added to its line-up, including a new highlights show called Acción on Sundays. The launch of TUDN also signaled the introduction of TUDNxtra, a package dedicated to bringing subscribers hundreds of exclusive matches from the UEFA Champions League, UEFA Europa League and the UEFA European Qualifiers for the period of the corresponding broadcast rights.
