About Primera Division
Primera Division History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Chilean Primera División is the top tier of professional football in Chile. Founded in 1933, it is currently organized by the National Professional Football Association of Chile (ANFP) and is also known as the Betsson Championship due to a sponsorship deal signed in 2023.
Colo-Colo is the most successful side in Chilean Primera División, with more titles won than any other side. The team is also the only one never to have been relegated in the competition’s history. Other teams who have also enjoyed success with multiple titles in the Chilean Primera División include Universidad de Chile, Universidad Católica and Cobreloa.
The competition has undergone numerous changes over the decades, but presently operates on a round-robin system where each team plays each other once (both home and away). The Chilean Primera División also operates on a relegation-promotion system in which the top two teams from the Primera B (second tier) are promoted to the Primera División while the two worst-performing teams from the Primera División are sent down to Primeira B.
Like other teams in South America, teams competing in the Chilean Primera División also have the opportunity to compete in either the Copa Libertadores or the Copa Sudamericana, depending on where they finish in the league table.
TNT Sports currently has TV broadcast rights to the Chilean Primera División in Chile after signing a multi-year deal with the ANFP in 2021 to become the exclusive broadcaster of the competition. CNN Chile also holds non-exclusive broadcast rights to select games. Meanwhile, in the USA, beIN Sports provides coverage of the Chilean Primera División, while the tournament can also be live-streamed via beIN Sports Connect as well as on fuboTV as it carries the beIN Sports programming.
