About Liga de Ascenso

Liga de Ascenso History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Liga de Ascenso de Costa Rica is the second most relevant football category in the Central American country. It was launched in 1921 under the name Segunda División, and despite being a lower-tier league, it has seen some of the best teams in this country playing games in the category.

Over the years, the Liga de Ascenso has adapted to the number of teams involved to develop their tournament system. The format of this competition sees the 18 clubs allocated into two groups of nine, and once they get to know their rivals, the league will include matches against all their group rivals twice, adding a bye week to their schedule. Once that stage is over, the top four in each group reach the postseason, where the fixtures will be determined by their group ranking. All rounds in the postseason phase will be played on a home-and-away format, with the title match being hosted by the club with the best record. There are two tournaments played each season in the Liga de Ascenso, the Apertura (played between July and December) and the Clausura (played from January to June).

Promotion in this league is determined by its champions. If two different clubs are crowned in the Apertura and Clausura competitions, the two winners face each other in a promotion playoff. If the same team wins both tournaments, then the team in question is promoted automatically.
Coverage of this competition has been granted to FUTV and TD+. Both networks agreed to share broadcasting rights for the tournament until 2025.
