About AFC Asian Cup

AFC Asian Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The AFC Champions League, which was recently renamed to the AFC Champions League Elite for the 2024-25 season onward, is Asia’s premier continental club competition. Founded in 1967 as the Asian Champion Club Tournament, this tournament later rebranded in 2002 and features the continent’s biggest teams.

As mentioned earlier, it began in 1967 and has undergone a number of changes. After the 1972 edition, the competition was discontinued only to make its return in 1985 as the Asian Club Championship. In 2002, it combined with the Asian Cup Winners' Cup and Asian Super Cup to form the AFC Champions League as we know it today.

The idea of how to allocate spots for this tournament was inspired by UEFA’s coefficient ranking which grants nations with higher coefficients more spots in the competition. In February 2022, the Asian Football Confederation, the AFC Champions League’s organising body, announced the decision to return to an inter-year (autumn to spring) schedule from the 2023-24 season onward.

The number of participants has changed throughout the years. In 2021, it was expanded from 32 to 40. In 2022, the competition was restructured with only 24 teams participating in the AFC Champions League — 12 from the East and West regions, respectively. Additionally, the AFC decided that a league stage would precede the round of 16, quarterfinals, semifinals, and final, thus bidding farewell to the well-established group stage. In 2023, the organisers confirmed that these changes would come into effect from the 2024-25 season onward once the competition rebranded to the AFC Champions League Elite.

South Korean, Japanese, and Saudi Arabian clubs have enjoyed tremendous success in this tournament, with the likes of Al-Hilal, Pohang Steelers, Seongnam FC, Al-Ittihad, Jeonbuk Hyundai Motors, and Urawa Red Diamonds having experienced success in the competition. Furthermore, the influx of superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Neymar, Sadio Mane, Riyad Mahrez, and Marco Verratti to the continent has attracted more global interest to Asian football.

The AFC Champions League has made it onto some of the largest broadcasters in the world, including ESPN Mexico, MENA (Middle East and North Africa) region heavyweights beIN Sports, and DAZN. In the USA, CBS Sports secured exclusive US broadcast rights for the AFC Asian Champions League for the 2021-2024 cycle, with video-on-demand and over-the-top streaming service Paramount+ bringing live streams to its US based subscribers.

Meanwhile, FITE+ entered the scene in 2023 after securing exclusive streaming rights for the AFC Champions League in five crucial European markets: the UK, Ireland, Belgium, France, and the Netherlands. This two-year deal earned the Triller-owned sport streaming service the ability to live stream all the AFC Champions League fixtures for the 2023-24 campaign.
