About Primera Division

Primera Division History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Peru First Division (Primera División Perú) is the top tier of association football in Peru. Founded in 1912, it operates on a relegation-promotion format like many other leagues worldwide and is organized by the Professional Football Sport Association (Asociación Deportiva de Fútbol Profesional - ADFP).

Although it was created in 1912, the Peru First Division did not become a fully professional entity until 1951, and the ADFP officially assumed the responsibility of its administration in 1962. Over 20 clubs have won the league championship since the First Division’s creation over 100 years ago, but the vast majority of league titles have been won by a handful of teams, including Universitario, Alianza Lima, and Sporting Cristal.

A total of eight teams from the Peru First Division are eligible to feature in either the Copa Libertadores or the Copa Sudamericana. The season usually starts in early February and concludes sometime in late November or early December, and is divided into three phases: the Apertura tournament (Torneo Apertura), the Clausura tournament (Torneo Clausura) and the play-offs.

DirecTV holds the TV and live-streaming rights for all Peru First Division matches, including highlights from the Torneo Apertura and Torneo Clausura. Gol Perú also broadcasts some of these games. The Peruvian Football Federation (FPF) live-streams matches on its YouTube channel for fans worldwide. In the USA, DirecTV broadcasts selected Peru First Division games.
