About Primera División Femenina

Primera División Femenina History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage

The Primera División Femenina de España, or Liga Iberdrola for sponsorship reasons, is the top-tier football category for women in Spain. It is considered as one of the most competitive leagues in its category around the world, with its first season taking place in 1988. The league has established itself despite a few complications during its early seasons, which saw them changing the format and number of teams involved.

The first season of this league was played by nine teams, but a lack of control saw the number of clubs escalate to 54 at one point. In 2012-13, the league determined that only 16 clubs were to take part in the competition.

The league works under a promotion-relegation system to determine which clubs will fight for the title each season. Every year, the two worst teams of the season will be relegated to the Segunda División Femenina, while the two best clubs will earn a spot in the UEFA Women’s Champions League as a reward for their efforts throughout the campaign.

The 2018-19 Liga Iberdrola season saw Atlético Madrid Femenino winning a third title in a row. Las Colchoneras topped Barcelona by six points in order to accomplish that feat. Both clubs earned a spot in the subsequent season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. On the other side of the table, Málaga CF and Fundación Albacete were relegated to the lower-tier category.

The 2019-20 campaign is scheduled to begin on September 7, 2019, with its conclusion set to take place in May of 2020. Deportivo Abanca and Club Deportivo TACÓN earned their promotion from the Segunda División. The latter will be confirmed as Real Madrid’s feminine team starting in June 2020.

Did you know? Athletic Club is the most successful club in this league, having won five titles since its creation. Barcelona, Atlético Madrid, and Levante follow their lead closely with four titles per club.
