About Major League Soccer
As a condition to host the 1994 World Cup, FIFA demanded the USA have a competitive soccer league. The Major League Soccer (MLS) was created as a result in 1996, with only ten teams in the league. Since then, this competition has expanded to 24 teams, divided in the Eastern and Western conferences.
The MLS regular season runs from March to October, with the top 14 teams making it to the playoffs. The winner of the post-season is awarded the MLS Cup and earns the right to play in the CONCACAF Champions League. One more trophy is played for during the regular season, as the team that earns the most points is awarded the Supporters’ Shield.
LA Galaxy, one of the league’s original teams, is still the club with the most MLS Cups with five titles to their name. D.C. United follows suit with four trophies, but they have failed to triumph again since they last won it in 2004.
Atlanta United became the 2018 Major League Soccer champions after beating Portland Timbers in the final clash. Atlanta won their first MLS Cup after two years in the league. Meanwhile, the New York Red Bulls claimed the 2018 Supporters’ Shield by earning the most points during the regular season.
The 2019 MLS season will see the introduction of a new franchise: Cincinnati FC. The league is expected to increase the number of teams to twenty-six in 2020, with Nashville FC and Inter Miami FC (owned by David Beckham) ready to make their debut. Two more franchises are expected to have joined by 2022, which will raise the team tally to 28.
The 2019 MLS season will also have a new playoff format, with 7 teams in each conference making it to that stage. The top-ranked team will get a first-round bye, while the remaining six teams enter a single-elimination bracket.
Did you know? Goalkeeper Nick Rimando is the league’s all-time leader in games played (508) and shutouts (152). The 40-year-old shot-stopper has stated that the 2019 season will be his last as a professional player.
