Manchester City vs. Chelsea Preview

The highly anticipated match between Manchester City and Chelsea is finally here.

The Blues have had a two-point cushion over Man City ever since their loss to Brighton & Hove Albion on Feb. 7. Now, the Sky Blue finally has a chance to surpass their rivals with a win at home.

Chelsea steamrolled Manchester City 3-1 at Kingsmeadow the last time they met in league play on Oct. 11, 2020. The Cityzens dominated in possession, with 522 passes completed and 77% pass accuracy, compared to Chelsea’s 396 passes and 67% passing accuracy. But Chelsea’s counter-attacking style got the best out of Manchester City, earning double City’s shot attempts and shots on target.

Manchester City, however, has grown under manager Gareth Taylor as the season has progressed. The Citizens are 9-0-2 since their loss to Chelsea and on an eight-game win streak since December 2020. The Sky Blue will head into this game with momentum going their way. Attacking players in Sam Kerr, Caroline Weir, Chloe Kelley, Lauren Hemp, Caroline Weir and Keira Walsh have all had moments of brilliance that have kept Manchester City’s hope to catch up to Chelsea alive.

Head coach Emma Hayes’ Chelsea has led the league since January and has not shown signs of slowing down. Forwards Samantha Kerr and Fran Kirby have taken the competition by a storm, combining for 47 goal contributions this season. Kerr is looking to best herself and dethrone Arsenal’s Vivianne Miedema from the golden boot award while helping Chelsea to back-to-back league titles. Meanwhile, Kirby is doing her best to help her team, both in the scoring – 14 goals – and assisting – 10 assists – departments.

Both Chelsea and Manchester City are the best defensive teams in the league, with 10 clean sheets. The Blues will most likely start with Jonna Andersson, Magdalena Eriksson, Millie Bright and Jessica Carter from left to right. Goalkeeper Ann-Katrin Berger, who played a huge role in Chelsea’s two-legged win over Wolfsburg in UEFA Women’s Champions League quarterfinals, will look to have another game in goal. On the other side of the pitch, Manchester City will most likely deploy a backline composed of Esme Morgan, Alex Greenwood, Abby Dahlkemper and Lucy Bronze as Man City captain is questionable for the game as she continues to deal with an Achilles problem.
