Liverpool will hope to keep their top four hopes alive when they welcome Newcastle to Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

Preview

Liverpool will welcome Newcastle to Anfield on Saturday as they look to close in on their objective to secure a Champions League place for next season. The Reds are currently sitting in the seventh position with two points separating them and third-placed Chelsea. With just six games of the season left, they will be eager to take significant strides and hope that the others rivalling them for the position also slip up.

They approach the weekend's clash with the Magpies on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw with Leeds United in their last Premier League outing. Having taken the lead through Sadio Mane's first-half strike, Klopp's side were dealt a huge disappointment in the dying embers of the game, conceding Diego Llorente's equalizer in the 87th minute.

With the result, Liverpool failed to climb into top-four despite seeing West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Chelsea slip in their respective matches. So far, they are without a win in their last two games across all competitions and have won just one of their last four. At home, they have not exactly been the force that they were noted to be as they have lost as many as six games at the venue in the Premier League this season.

With that in mind, Newcastle will be eager to get the better of the defending champions especially considering that they also need the points to safeguard their participation in the league next season. The Magpies have faced an uphill battle to stay afloat this season and are almost close to the finish line.

The upcoming fixture list seems telling but Steve Bruce's men will look to build on their recent form to prevent any unfortunate happenings. So far, they have recorded just one defeat in their last seven outings, drawing four and winning the remaining two. They enter the weekend's meeting on the back of a three-game unbeaten run, having successively won against Burnley and West Ham after drawing with Tottenham Hotspur.

In the last meeting between Newcastle and Liverpool in December last year, none of the sides managed to break the deadlock as the game ended in stalemates. However, it is worth noting that the former have not won a single game against the Magpies since 2015. They have registered five defeats and three draws.

Team news

Joe Gomez, Virgil van Dijk, Joel Matip and Jordan Henderson are all ruled out of contention with injuries. Nat Phillips will also be amiss after picking up a hamstring injury in the draw with Leeds United.

For Newcastle, star man Alan-Saint Maxim is expected to sit out the encounter having limped off with an ankle injury. Ryan Fraser, Isaac Hayden, Jamaal Lascelles, Fabian Schar, and Karl Darlow are all set for spells on the sidelines. Meanwhile, there is a boost in the side with Callum Wilson recovering in time for the clash.

Predicted starting XI

  • Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Fabinho, Kabak, Robertson; Thiago, Wijnaldum, Milner; Salah, Jota, Mane.

  • Newcastle United: Dubravka; Murphy, Fernandez, Clark, Dummett, Ritchie; Shelvey, Longstaff; Almiron; Wilson, Joelinton.
