Die Mannschaft go in search of their fifth title but will face stiff competition at Qatar 2022, both within their group and in the knockout stage. Here's how you can follow Germany's matches in the upcoming FIFA World Cup.

Watch the World Cup in Germany - Match Schedule, TV and streaming

ARD and ZDF have reached an agreement in Germany to share access to 48 matches of the 2022 FIFA World Cup. ARD's schedule includes two group matches involving the German national team—specifically against Japan and Costa Rica—in addition to the final. The distribution agreement with ZDF also allows ARD to show Germany's match in the quarterfinal, should the team qualify for that stage. ARD's Qatar 2022 coverage includes match highlights, analysis, previews, and reports, and all the action may be followed online on its website or the ARD Mediathek app.

Public service broadcaster ZDF has partnered with fellow public network operator ARD to show the 2022 FIFA World Cup live in Germany on free-to-air television. ZDF's Qatar 2022 package includes the opening match, as well as the German national team's second group-stage match against Spain. Should Germany make it to the knockout stage, the nation's round of 16 and possible semifinal fixtures would air live on ZDF. All of ZDF's 2022 FIFA World Cup matches are expected to be streamed live on the network's official website, as well as on the ZDFmediathek & live TV app.

Telekom Deutschland-owned Magenta TV has secured German pay-TV rights to the tournament in Qatar. Magenta TV is set to stream 16 matches exclusively; however, it does not have first-choice privileges in selecting the matches on its platform, as these rights are held by national broadcasters ARD and ZDF

About Germany in FIFA World Cup history

It is no secret that Germany are one of the most successful nations in this tournament. In fact, die Mannschaft have lifted this prestigious trophy a whopping four times, a feat bested by only Brazil (5) and equaled only by Italy (also four). Additionally, the all-time leading scorer in this competition's history (excluding qualifiers) is German icon Miroslav Klose, netting an impressive 16 goals. Furthermore, bar the inaugural 1930 FIFA World Cup in Uruguay, which Germany did not enter, and Brazil 1950, in which they were banned from participating, the European giants have qualified for every other tournament.

Who is Germany's coach for the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

Hansi Flick is in charge of the German national team and he is a man who needs no introduction. Despite this, the 57-year-old hasn't been a manager for extremely long. He endured a five-year reign in charge of Hoffenheim between 2000 and 2005. However, from 2006 to 2019, the tactician only enjoyed spells as an assistant coach, first at Red Bull Salzburg and then with the national team, aiding his predecessor Joachim Low.

There was also a three-year spell as sporting director at the German Football Association after the 2014 World Cup until January 2017. However, in 2019, Flick, a former Bayern Munich player, returned to the Allianz Arena as an assistant to Niko Kovac. When the Croatian boss left Die Roten after a horrible start, Hansi took over as interim boss before being appointed the permanent manager, leading the Bavarians to a historic sextuple. In 2021, he departed the Bundesliga giants and was unveiled as the German national teammanager shortly after, later becoming only the third coach in history to go undefeated in his first 10 games in charge of the European giants.

Germany's expectations ahead of the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The goal is simple: given that die Mannschaft are one of the greatest footballing nations, both historically and currently, the objective will be to win a record-equaling fifth FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, the four-time champions have been placed in a tricky group and will likely battle it out with Spain for the top spot. Additionally, should Germany make it out of the group stage, Flick's men could face another difficult test in the round of 16 due to the bracket as one of Belgium, Croatia, or even Canada likely await them in the knockout stage.

Germany: Key players for the 2022 FIFA World Cup

The European giants are blessed with talent, but should Germany go all the way and lift the 2022 FIFA World Cup title, then a few players will need to be at their best. The first name is an obvious mention as it is none other than Manuel Neuer, one of the greatest goalkeepers in the history of the beautiful game. The Bayern Munich icon was at the heart of the nation's 2014 success and will need to be unbeatable in goal once more.

However, a brilliant goalkeeper is nothing without a formidable defense and this is why Antonio Rudiger will be key for the four-time world champions. The Real Madrid center-back established himself as one of the best out there during his time with Chelsea and will look to keep things tight at the back.

Two midfielders to keep an eye on are Joshua Kimmich and Ilkay Gundogan as the Bayern Munich and Manchester City pair are two excellent maestros with vast experience and knowledge of the game. Flick's side will attempt to dominate most of their games and this aforementioned duo will be key to that.

And finally, while Thomas Muller has 10 FIFA World Cup goals under his belt and could equal Miroslav Klose's record in what looks to be his final tournament, we wanted to give a shoutout to another player, one who will make his debut in this competition. That person is Jamal Musiala, the brilliant Allianz Arena talent who is destined to make the final roster. The 19-year-old has already hit double digits in goal contributions in the Bundesliga alone and could show football fans across the world why he is regarded as one of the best young players out there.

Germany's 2022 FIFA World Cup schedule

As mentioned earlier, Germany will face competition from Spain in Group E. However, Japan and Costa Rica, their two other opponents, should not be underestimated either.
