The Azzurri were crowned as champions to end an extraordinary run in the European cup competition.

Italy have won the 2020 European Championship after beating England on penalties. The Azzurri run away with a 3-2 win from the shoot-out to secure their second-ever title of the competition having won the first one in 1968.

It was generally an impressive performance by both sides although initial indications pointed at a probable triumphant night for England. The Three Lions, who were chasing their first trophy win in 55 years, had the best of starts with Luke Shaw putting them ahead just two minutes after kick-off. Nevertheless, a tactical change in the second half did the job for the Italians who managed an equalizer in the 67th-minute, thanks to Leonardo Bonucci.

Following the 1-1 draw in the regulation time, an extra-time was of the essence but nothing significant came out of it despite the two sides knocking. The penalty shoot-outs were ushered in with Domenico Berardi and Harry Kane hitting the targets for their respective sides. England were handed the advantage after Andrea Belotti have his effort save and Harry Maguire converted his attempt. Leonardo Bonucci kept the hope alive for the Azzurri before the tables turned against their opponents.

Substitutes Marcus Rashford and Jadon Sancho had their attempts saved in succession. In-between, Federico Bernadeschi had scored to put Roberto Manchini's side ahead. Jorginho then had his effort saved by Pickford before Donnarumma gathered Bukayo Saka's strike to keep the score at 3-2 and secure the win for his side.
