The Stars and Stripes will lock horns with the Reggae Boyz in what should be an interesting battle. Here's a preview of their weekend showdown.

Preview

One of the standout fixtures of the 2021 Gold Cup quarterfinals takes place on Sunday, with continental giants the USMNT gearing up for a showdown with Jamaica, one of the underdogs of the tournament. The AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas will be the venue for this 9:30 p.m. showdown as the Stars and Stripes look to book their ticket to the semifinals.

Both teams entered the final matchday of the group stage with a shot at topping their group, but it was only Gregg Berhalter's that seized that opportunity, hence this matchup. The hosts got through the first hurdle without much hiccups, winning three out of three, picking up nine points out of a possible nine.

Thee 2019 runners-up kicked things off with a crucial but uninspiring 1-0 victory over Haiti. After that came a 6-1 thrashing of Martinique but that goalscoring spree did not continue as the United States registered another 1-0 triumph in their third fixture, a showdown with continental rivals Canada.

That result secured the U.S. their top-spot finish as Les Rouges also had a perfect record up until that point. However, critics will point to the fact that after capitalizing on an early goal, Berhalter's side sat on their guns and—for the most part—simply defended their one-goal lead. Regardless, the home side haven't failed to make it past the quarterfinals since 2000 and will thus feel confident ahead of this weekend showdown.

Jamaica, meanwhile, enter this clash on the back of a deflating defeat. Despite being the better side and emerging on top in almost every single category such as possession and shots taken, the Reggae Boyz fell to a 1-0 loss against Costa Rica on matchday 2. Can they return to winning ways and beat the USMNT on Sunday? Tune in to find out.

Team news

USA: Paul Arriola sat out the 1-0 victory over Canada and is thus a huge doubt for Sunday's clash. Reggie Cannon, on the other hand, has recovered from a hamstring issue and appears destined to feature. Walker Zimmerman has started every single game for the USMNT so far, captaining the Stars and Stripes in their last two outings, and is likely to continue leading his nation.

Jamaica: Andre Blake was given a breather in Jamaica's loss to Costa Rica but is likely to return to the lineup. Bobby Reid has recovered from COVID-19 but it remains to be seen whether he will get the nod or not. Kemar Lawrence, who made his first start in the 1-0 loss to Los Ticos, will be hopeful of starting.

Key stats

  • This will be the 29th encounter between these two nations.

  • Jamaica have managed only three wins out of their previous 28 encounters.

  • USMNT, on the other hand, boast 17 victories in this matchup.

  • The last time these two sides faced off was in a friendly back in March, with the Stars and Stripes triumphing 4-1.
