Los Blancos enjoyed an impressive return to Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, while Los Colchoneros claimed a late late win against Espanyol to follow suit.

The first weekend of action in La Liga after the international break left fans wanting more, as Atlético Madrid, Real Madrid, and Valencia continued to dominate the Spanish top-flight after their performances this past Saturday and Sunday.

There were two postponed games, but that was no reason for fans not to enjoy the rest of the matches that took place. With performances as the ones displayed by Valencia and Real Madrid, this was one of the most prolific weekends in front of goal for the entire Spanish Primera División.

With that in mind, let's have a look at what went down in the past few days in La Liga.

Who are the top five La Liga teams after Matchday 4?

As mentioned before, Real Madrid, Atlético and Valencia lead the pack with ten points after four games. All of them are still unbeaten in the tournament, but Los Blancos have shown impressive skills in front of goal to cement their spot as the top team. Real Sociedad and Athletic complete the top five teams, although thay could change once Sevilla and Barcelona play their delayed game.

La Liga top 3 scorers

With his hat-trick this weekend, Karim Benzema claimed the top scorer spot in La Liga. The French striker was key to Los Blancos' come-from-behind win over Celta Vigo with three goals and one assist. Right behind him are Mikel Oyarzabal and Vinicius, both of them with four goals.

Benzema scored his sixth hat-trick for Real Madrid this Sunday.

La Liga – Top headlines

  • Atlético make Espanyol their favorite "client" in La Liga - The defending champions came from behind to beat Los Periquitos at their own home, and the first of their two goals in this game gave Simeone's men a milestone, as they scored their 300th goal against a single La Liga opponent for the first time ever. The player that will go down in history as the scorer of that match is Yannick Ferreira Carrasco.

  • Benzema equals CR7's goalscoring influence for Los Blancos in start of the season - Los Blancos' success since Cristiano Ronaldo's departure has been strongly linked to Karim Benzema's performances, and his contribution to their start of this league has equaled that of CR7 during the 2014-15 season. Back then, the Portuguese footballer scored nine goals to begin the season, and this year, Benzema has scored five goals and contributed with four assists. Talk about being an all-around player!

  • Athletic end game-winning hoodoo against Mallorca - Athletic are enjoying a good start of the season, and on that note, their second win in a row ended a drought of 45 games in which they had been unable to win back-to-back games. Those wins have propelled them to the fifth spot in La Liga, although they could slip behind Sevilla or Barcelona once they play their pending match.

Top matches to watch in La Liga on September Aug. 17-20, 2021

Atlético Madrid vs Athletic Club: Los Colchoneros enter this clash on a high note, and facing Athletic will serve two purposes: they will try to continue their unbeaten run, and they will also have their first serious test of the season. Atlético will face the team with the best defensive record this season, and watching their star-studded cast face Los Leones de San Mamés will be quite interesting.

Valencia vs Real Madrid: One of the most anticipated games of each season will take place this weekend when Valencia host Real Madrid. Both teams sit at the top of the table with ten points, and if that was not enough reason to get you excited, these teams are the most prolific in front of goal with thirteen goals for Los Blancos and nine for Valencia. See why you need to watch this game?

Barcelona vs Granada: The Blaugrana side returns to action after having this week's game postponed, and they will do so against one of the most surprising teams from the past two seasons in the Spanish top-flight. Despite Granada's form, it should be an interesting game to watch for fans of both teams, especially Blaugrana fans who will want to see how the team behaves after their busy end of the transfer window.
