The classic Champions League encounter with Liverpool and AC Milan set to lock horns at Anfield on Wednesday.

Preview

Football fans are set to be treated to a replay of the 2005 and 2007 UEFA Champions League finals when Liverpool welcome AC Milan to Anfield on Wednesday. The two clubs will be featuring in their opening game of Group B, the group that has rightfully earned the label as the group of death considering the pedigree of the clubs it comprises of. The other two contingents, Atletico Madrid and FC Porto, will be involved elsewhere, with the latter hoping to stage an upset against one o the favorites.

For Liverpool, it is an "all or nothing" mission as a win over Milan on Wednesday should set them on course to securing a good finish at the end of the group campaign. Having won the European title from two seasons ago, the Reds barely stood a chance last season after injuries to several key players hampered their charge. Needless to say, they go into the upcoming clash with renewed vigor, having had a great start to the new season.

In the past weekend, the Reds put Leeds United to the sword and secured an emphatic 3-0 win, extending their unbeaten run in the Premier League to four since the campaign began. So have, they have conceded just one goal in those four outings. In the grand scheme of things, they have not picked up a defeat in a competitive game since falling to Real Madrid in the quarter-finals of the Champions League back in April. While it might not present the real picture, Jurgen Klopp's men could also take positives from the fact that they have won of their last two meetings with Milan - both which were in the pre-season's International Champions Cup.

The two clubs have met twice in the Champions League in the last two decades with both sides securing a win and apiece and a trophy as well in the process. With the last victory and trophy heading to Milan in the 2007 clash as they avenged that 2005 defeat in Istanbul, they will be poised to carry on and deliver yet another spectacl. They approach the game on the back of a brilliant start to life in Serie A, winning three games on the bounce, including a 2-0 win over Lazio over the weekend.

The biggest talking point that emerged from the camp of Stefan Pioli's side is the absence of Zlatan Ibrahimovic who picked up an Achilies injury in the build-up to the game. However, the likes of Olivier Giroud, Rafael Leao and Brahim Diaz should be on hand to help the San Siro outfit.

Predicted starting XI

  • Liverpool: Alisson; Alexander-Arnold, Van Dijk, Matip, Robertson; Henderson, Fabinho, Thiago; Salah, Jota, Mane

  • AC Milan: Maignan; Calabria, Tomori, Romagnoli, Hernandez; Kessie, Tonali; Florenzi, Diaz, Leao; Rebic.
