Manchester City bounced back from an embarrassing 4-0 home loss against Chelsea by taking down Aston Villa 5-0 in the weekend. Let’s take a look at what happened in the Barclays FA Women’s Super League Matchday 8.

The Claret and Blue frustrated the Citizens throughout the entirety of the first half, keeping the score at a goalless draw. However, Scottish midfielder Caroline Weir gave Man City an early lead in the second half, and the team proceeded to score four more after. Australian forward Haley Rasso notched her first two goals as a Manchester City player from the bench.

The win against Aston Villa put Manchester City just five points away from Brighton & Hove Albion despite a rocky 2-4-1 start to their 2021/22 Barclays FA Women's Super League season. With more than half of the season left to play, Man City’s Champions League qualification hopes are well-alive.

While Manchester City is showing good signs of a comeback, Manchester United is tumbling down the FA WSL table.

Manager Mark Skinner’s Manchester United failed to win a league match for the fourth consecutive time. The last time Man Utd picked up three points was over a month ago – Oct. 3 – in a 2-0 away win against Birmingham City. The Red Devils' last four league results have been three draws – against Man City, Tottenham, Everton – and a 2-0 home loss to Arsenal last weekend. United now sits in sixth with 12 points behind West Ham, Tottenham and Brighton.

Skinner has two weeks to regather, plan and prepare for a game against third-place Brighton on Dec. 12.

Lastly, Birmingham City became Chelsea’s latest victim after losing 5-0 at Kingsmeadow. Australian forward Sam Kerr scored a hattrick to go to the top of the goalscoring charts with nine goals in just eight games and five starts.

Barclays FA Women’s Super League action will return on Saturday, Dec. 11, when Reading hosts Chelsea at Madejski Stadium.
