The Reds travel to Villa Park to avenge their 7-2 defeat there last season and to return to winning ways, having drawn 1-1 at home to Tottenham over the weekend.

Preview

Liverpool are back in action this midweek in the Premier League as the Merseyside giants gear up for an interesting showdown with Aston Villa. The heated title race carries on as the Reds look to return to winning ways when they visit Vila Park and former iconic midfielder Steven Gerrard.

Klopp's men enter this clash on the back of their recent disappointment at home to Tottenham. Van Dijk and Co. hosted the north London giants in need of a win in order to remain within touching distance of league leaders Manchester City. However, Antonio Conte had different plans as Liverpool were eventually frustrated by the visitors.

Despite dominating the ball, taking several shots, and whipping in many crosses, Salah and his fellow teammates struggled to break down the opposition. In fact, the UIEFA Champions League finalists can consider themselves fortunate to have even picked up a draw, as a deflected Luis Diaz shot cancelled out Heung-Min Son's opener to rescue them a point.

The Cityzens would go on to win their respective game, thrashing Newcastle 5-0 the day later. This means that not only are Klopp's side three points behind Guardiola's men, but Liverpool now also boast an inferior goal difference in comparison with their bitter rivals, meaning the title would remain in Manchester if the Reds equaled their points tally.

And with only three games left in the campaign, time isn't on the Merseyside giants' side. One thing the visitors should remember is their unfortunate luck when they last visited Villa Park. Last season's trip to the Birmingham outfit saw them get annihilated 7-2, a result which has not been forgotten until this day. However, a lot has changed since then for both teams as Liverpool aim to beat Gerrard's men.

As one man on Twitter jokingly stated, Stevie has cost Liverpool a Premier League title once before, mocking the iconic midfielder for that unfortunate slip back at Anfield against Chelsea. However, with the Englishman now managing Aston Villa, it will be his duty to stop the Reds in their tracks.

Ings and Co. enter this game on the back on a lovely 3-1 triumph over Burnley, a result which put a huge dent in the Clarets' hopes of staying up in the Premier League. However, the Villans still remain outside of the top 10 in the table.

The home side's form has been a bit inconsistent as of late. The recent victory over Burnley was their second consecutive triumph in their last two outings but in their last 15 games, Gerrard's men have triumphed only six times, hence their struggles as of late.

Will Gerrard pick up a point or three against his former club and hammer the final nail in the Reds' coffin? Do not miss this clash at Villa Park.

Team news

Aston Villa: Jacob Ramsey is absent for the home side, which is a huge blow, as a goalscoring threat from midfield would have been beneficial in this tie. Elsewhere, the home side have no new concerns.

Liverpool: Roberto Firmino returned from injury prior to the Tottenham game but was not rushed back onto the pitch and could thus make his return in this fixture. However, it will be interesting to see whether Klopp sticks with the same lineup or whether he rotates for the FA Cup final as Keita and Jota look to work their way back into the starting eleven.

Key stats

  • Having beaten Liverpool 7-2 in their last Villa Park showdown, Aston Villa look to win consecutive home league games over the Merseyside giants for the first time since February 1998.

  • Salah and Co. have only failed to score in one away league game this season and that was their 1-0 defeat at Leicester.

  • Klopp's men are yet to drop a single point against a team from the bottom half of the table, wining all 18 fixtures so far.
