The FIFA World Cup will cause the top club competition in the world to suffer a four-month halt between the group stage and the KO Stage.

The end of the 2021-22 UEFA Champions League was quite exciting, with Real Madrid lifting the title after three rounds for the ages that featured comeback wins for Los Blancos. Now, UEFA has already shared with fans all over the world their calendar for the 2022-23 season, but something tells us that fans will not be as interested in the competition for several reasons.

The first one of them has to do with the amount of weeks it will take for the group stage to be played. Usually, the tournament's stage started in September and ended in the first week of December. Nevertheless, with the FIFA World Cup being played between November and December, UEFA will pack all six matchdays between September 6-7 (Matchday 1) and November 1-2 (Matchday 6).

The only break from UEFA Champions League play will come between September 15 and October 3 due to the FIFA International Break. Some leagues from all over the world will be forced to continue playing their regular season games despite the break to fit in all their matches for the season, and that could be one more cause for UEFA to bring the competition to a halt during those two weeks.

But if two weeks seemed too long for a waiting period, how about a four-month break after the end of the group stage? The first UCL match after the group stage and the FIFA World Cup will be taking place on February 14, 2023, which means that we will have to deal with no Champions League football for over four months.

This hiatus will also force the competition to see its title clash being played on June 10 at Ataturk Stadium in Istanbul, Turkey. Have a look at all the dates published by UEFA earlier today.
