CFA Super Cup History, Format, Organization, Media Coverage
The Chinese FA Super Cup is a tournament organized by the Chinese FA. It is considered to be the kickoff to every season in Chinese football since it is held before the start of the Chinese Super League. The tournament is usually played by the winners of the Chinese Super League and the Chinese FA Cup winners, but if the same team won both competitions the previous year, the runners-up of the league are invited to play in this competition. It is usually held at a neutral venue.
This tournament was played for the first time in 1995, with a long pause between 2003 and 2012. The CFA Super Cup has been disputed without interruption since then.
One of the most interesting aspects of this tournament is that the same rules apply for all teams in regard to fielding foreign players and U-23 footballers. There can never be more foreigners on the pitch than local u-23 players. This rule forces clubs to limit themselves when hiring stars from around the world in order to boost local talent.
Did you know? Guangzhou Evergrande entered the second decade of the 21st century as the most successful team in the Chinese Super FA Cup, with four titles to their name -- the fourth one coming in 2018.
