Arteta's men will host the high-flying Premier League leaders in Sunday's epic showdown. Here's a preview of Arsenal vs Man City.

Arsenal vs Man City – preview

Sunday will see the master and the apprentice lock horns once again as Mikel Arteta gears up to face Pep Guardiola in Arsenal vs Man City. These two Premier League giants will battle it out at 11:30 a.m. ET as the Gunners aim to beat the EPL leaders having lost twice to them already this season.

This game is a crucial one for both sides. Having returned to the top 10 with their 4-2 weekend win over Leeds, Arsenal could make up crucial ground in the race to qualify for Europe. The north London giants are eight points behind fifth-placed West Ham and nine behind fourth-placed Chelsea, meaning they cannot afford a slip up.

Arteta's men head into this fixture on the back of a disappointing 1-1 draw against Benfica in the Europa League, a competition they look to miss out on next season the way things currently stand. Tottenham and Aston Villa, who occupy the ninth and 10th spot respectively, are only two points ahead while Everton (7th) and Liverpool (6th) are only six points ahead. This means victory over Man City would bring them within three points of the two Merseyside giants. However, Arteta's men have not fared well against Pep's side this season, losing 1-0 in the reverse fixture while crashing out in the Carabao Cup 4-1 at the hands of the Citizens.

Additionally, Sterling and Co. head into this tie on the back of excellent form, the best they have ever enjoyed. Man City boast a 17-game winning streak across all competitions, triumphing in their last 12 league matches. Their most recent fixture was a midweek showdown against Everton, their game in hand, with the Etihad Stadium side marching to a 3-1 triumph.

That result saw them move 10 points clear of closest rivals Man Utd. Guardiola will have one eye on Wednesday's Champions League showdown with Borussia M'gladbach but the Citizens have enough quality in their squad to hold their own at the Emirates Stadium.

Team news

Arsenal: Thomas Partey remains unavailable for the home side but Kieran Tierney should start after making his return in the 1-1 draw with Benfica. Aubameyang put in a horrible display in the European stalemate but is expected to retain his starting position, with Lacazette hopeful of returning to the lineup.

Man City: Gundogan is expected to be fit for this game. Elsewhere, Kevin De Bruyne made his much-welcomed return and could start Sunday's game. Sergio Aguero remains a doubt while Nathan Ake is yet to return.

Key stats

  • Man City are unbeaten in their last 12 Premier League meetings with Arsenal, last losing to the Gunners back in December 2015.

  • Should the north London giants lose, it would be their eighth defeat in a row against the Citizens, equaling the record for more consecutive losses against a single opponent (8 vs Leeds).

  • Guardiola's men look to become only the third team in history to win twice at Arsenal in the same season, joining Nottingham Forest and Aston Villa.

  • Arteta's side haven't lost any of their last six home games.
