The Blues have finally tied down the veteran defender to new contract.

Thiago Silva has signed a new contract with Chelsea, extending his stay at Stamford Bridge beyond the end of this season, the club officially announced. The 38-year-old was set to leave the club with his current contract expiring this summer but will now continue until June 2024 at least.

The arrival of the former Paris Saint-Germain defender has been nothing short of a shrewd piece of business for Chelsea. Despite his age, the player has revitalized the backline of the London club, offered them a solid base on which the success they have enjoyed in the past couple of years has been built on. With 100 appearances under his belt and a Champions League title, the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup to show for, a decision was made by the Blues' hierarchy to extend his contract.

'We're delighted that Thiago has decided to continue with Chelsea," Chelsea chairman Todd Boehly and co-controlling owner Behdad Eghbali said in the official statement.

'He's a world-class talent, as he's proven over many years for club and country, and his experience, quality and leadership skills are vital to our vision going forward.

'We're thrilled he has extended his contract with us and we look forward to more success with him ahead!'

Thiago Silva, who has always been in favor of playing at the top level and staying at Chelsea, expressed his delight after signing the contract extension. He said: 'I am honestly so happy to continue my career with the Blues,' Thiago said shortly after signing.

'When I signed my first contract here, it was to just do one year. Now it is already the fourth! I could not have imagined that, but really it is a very special moment for me to sign and stay at Chelsea.'

This season, Thiago Silva has made 24 appearances for Chelsea and still remains on an upward trajectory. In the Premier League, the 38-year-old has been one of the club's best players, racking up two assists and six clean sheets in 19 outings.
