The Special One departs the Italian capital after leading the Giallorossi to their first-ever European title in his debut campaign.

It is official: Jose Mourinho is no longer the manager of Roma.

Following back-to-back defeats against bitter rivals Lazio in the Coppa Italia and AC Milan in Serie A, the Giallorossi made the inevitable decision and announced it early on Tuesday. The Special One, who led the club to back-to-back European finals in his first two seasons in charge, has been sacked.

"AS Roma can confirm that José Mourinho and his coaching staff will leave the club with immediate effect," the club announced via an official statement on X (formerly Twitter).

"Further updates on the new First Team coaching staff will follow imminently."

The Special One departs the Italian capital with Roma sitting ninth in the table. While Lukaku and Co. are only five points adrift of the UEFA Champions League spots, things have turned sour this season, with many beginning to question the Portuguese tactician following their recent slump.

The Giallorossi have won only one of their last six league games. Furthermore, the team crashed out of the Coppa Italia quarterfinals at the hand of hated rivals Lazio and were criticized by the fans following the 3-1 loss at the San Siro in their most recent fixture.

Furthermore, as reported by the Gazzetta dello Sport, Roma's American owners The Friedkin Group were already exploring sacking the manager, and while Mourinho enjoyed relentless support from the fans, even this began waning.

Regardless, the 60-year-old leaves the Italian capital having made history. After being appointed in 2021, Jose led the club to their first-ever European trophy in his debut campaign, winning the UEFA Europa Conference League. A year later, he guided the team to the UEFA Europa League final but lost to Sevilla on penalties.

While a replacement has not been officially confirmed, Daniele De Rossi has emerged as the favorite to replace Mourinho. The Roma icon spent time with the Italian national team under Roberto Mancini and last managed Serie B side SPAL, but that was a short spell that ended last February.
