With Ilkay Gundogan having left and Bernardo Silva being linked with an exit, Guardiola's men desperately need new midfielders. However, they are facing competition from Chelsea for one of their targets.

Manchester City, a club that has more often than not gotten its way in the transfer window, missed out on two huge targets this summer. With Ilkay Gundogan leaving and Bernardo Silva being linked with an exit, the club pursued two world-class midfielders to reshuffle their squad but missed out on both.

The first was Jude Bellingham, with the teenage sensation snubbing the Cityzens in favor of a move to Real Madrid. After missing out on the Birmingham City academy graduate, Guardiola's side turned their attention towards West Ham captain Declan Rice. However, the treble-winning side suffered a defeat once again, this time losing out to Arsenal, with the Gunners being on the brink of signing the Three Lions ace.

As a result, the champions of England have turned to another highly-rated midfielder. That player is Gabri Veiga, the talented – but inexperienced – Celta Vigo ace who burst onto the scene in La Liga last season, grabbing 11 goals and four assists to help his side avoid relegation.

However, just as was the case with Declan Rice, City are facing stiff competition from a London giant in the race to sign Veiga. That team is Chelsea, with the Evening Standard revealing that the Blues have thrown their hat in the race for the 21-year-old.

Initially, Todd Boehly and Co. were focusing on bringing a defensive midfielder to partner Enzo Fernandez in the middle of the park. Moises Caicedo has been identified as the key target, with the mega-rice Premier League side set to open talks with Brighton for the Ecuadorian sensation.

However, the recent exodus which has seen Havertz, Koulibaly, Ziyech, Kovacic, Loftus-Cheek, and Mendy leave, with Hudson-Odoi expected to depart as well, means Chelsea can add another attacking midfielder to their rank. Mason Mount is pushing for an exit to join rivals Manchester United being, and as a result, the Blues have identified Veiga as the man to replace Mount.

It will be interesting to see whether the Cityzens miss out on another midfield target after losing their captain and icon Gundogan for free. While Veiga is said to be interested in a Manchester City move, one could imagine him getting more minutes at Chelsea due to the lack of competition. However, on the flip side, Guardiola's men will be in five competitions next season, including the FIFA Club World Cup, which means there will be more minutes at the Etihad Stadium.
