South Africa will lock horns with World Cup hosts Brazil in an international friendly at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday, the 5th of March 2014.

Preview: Brazil poised to maintain good form

The Seleção have been in terrific form recently having won all of their last six friendly matches and will be hoping to keep their streak going with a win over Bafana Bafana. Luiz Felipe Scolari's men have not played a competitive match since defeating reigning World champions Spain in the Confederations Cup Final, owing to the fact that they are hosting this year’s tournament.

However their next three friendlies including the ones against Panama and Serbia which follow their trip to South Africa will potentially prepare them for the test they are to face at this year’s illustrious event.

South Africa on the other hand will be a tricky test for Brazil with Gordon Igesund’s men having lost just once in their last six matches. Bernard Parker is one of the players who has the potential to cause a lot of menace in the opposition half for South Africa. The 27 year old has scored five goals in his last four appearances for the national side including the winner in Brazil’s 1-0 win over Spain.

South Africa will use this fixture to respond to their disappointing World Cup Qualification campaign and head coach Gordon Igesund is confident that his team can pull off an upset after positive performances against Brazil and Spain last year.

"It is not every day that one gets to play against five-time world champions," coach Gordon Igesund said.

"This is a great opportunity for us to continue from where we left off against Spain last year. We played Brazil in Sao Paolo and narrowly lost 1-0 [in September 2012].

"They are the hosts of the 2014 World Cup, so they will definitely be taking this match seriously as you can see from the squad they have selected."

"I also have a lot of confidence in the squad I have selected and I believe we will be very competitiveon the night. This should be a very good challenge for the players."

Luiz Felipe Scolari will use Wednesday’s fixture as a platform to provide opportunity to players who have not regularly played for the national side to prove their worth. One of these players is Manchester City midfielder Fernandinho who after commendable performances for his club has been included in the squad to face South Africa. The 28 year old who has represented Brazil on five occasions will join five other English based players which include David Luiz, Oscar, Ramires, Willian and Tottenham midfielder Paulinho.

Another player who has managed to make the cut is Bayern Munich defender Rafinha who has only once featured for the national side, with his sole appearance for Brazil coming back in 2008.

The former Genoa man expressed his gratitude to club manager Pep Guardiola under whom Rafinha has regularly featured in the Bayern Munich starting eleven, the 28 year old also conveyed his desire of making it to the final squad for the world cup.

"He [Guardiola] has given me self-confidence again and made me play," said Rafinha.

"Sure he [Guardiola] has opened the door for the national team by giving me his trust," he continued.

"I want to go to Brazil, but first I concentrate fully on the tasks with Bayern. My feet remain on the ground. If I do a good job here, the rest comes by itself."
