After spearheading his country’s 2-0 victory over Burkina Faso at their opening game of the 2015 Africa Cup of nations, an upbeat Pierre Aubameyang spoke to the press about the difficulty of playing in the high temperatures in Equatorial Guinea and of his desire to emulate continental greats like former Ivory Coast captain Didier Drogba.
Asked if he could be the next big thing in African football after Drogba’s and Eto’o’s departures, he said, "I try to do the maximum to be one of the greats like Drogba and Eto'o. I don't feel any pressure to be like them, but there is maybe a level of expectation around me.”
"When people expect great things from you, you try to do great things."
Aubameyang also spoke about the adaptation he has had to make from playing in Germany for Borussia Dortmund where it is almost always near freezing point to playing in Eq. Guinea at a temperature of 28 degrees Celsius.
"Yes, it is a very big difference," said the Gabonese.
"It can affect you. But if you want to be a top player you have to learn to cope with it, to play in extreme heat or in snow.
"You get used to it when you go back and forth for the qualifiers, and I found it pleasant to play in the heat."
